Albumin: friend or foe?University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust, Birmingham, UK, Peter.Gosling{at}university-b.wmids.nhs.uk In the absence of red blood cells or any other colloid, human albumin has saved thousands of lives since its first use in 1941. However, for general volume expansion purposes including trauma resuscitation, published evidence suggests that albumin has now been superseded by synthetic colloids, which are more effective volume expanders, have vascular protective effects and are cheaper.
